Alvin ISD’s board of trustees approved a mutual aid agreement between the Texas Department of Safety and the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office to establish emergency response protocols for district schools at its Dec. 9 meeting.

Zooming in

Under the agreement, DPS and the sheriff’s office will:
  • Identify all local first-responder agencies likely to respond to an emergency
  • Outline how resources and personnel will be deployed
  • Set procedures for coordination during an emergency
The agencies will also be required to conduct a tabletop exercise, or a discussion-based simulation, every odd-numbered year and an in-person drill every even-numbered year, according to district documents.

Some context

The approval comes as part of the district’s compliance with House Bill 33, or the "Uvalde Strong Act," which requires school districts and local government agencies employing first responders to enter into an agreement that establishes emergency response and safety expectations.
