The band was selected out of over 100 applicants, and will be one of 10 participating in the parade, according to an Oct. 7 news release from Pearland ISD.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have our amazing students in the pride of Pearland band selected to perform in the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Pearland High School Band Director Ryan Demkovich said in the news release. “This is a monumental honor and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students to showcase their talent and dedication on a global stage.”

The band also received a $10,000 grant from Macy’s to kick-start fundraising efforts and help fund the march and prepare for their trip to New York City, according to the news release.
The history
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade started in 1924 to celebrate and kick off the holiday season with a world-class lineup of iconic character balloons, floats, music’s biggest talents and Santa Claus, the news release noted.
While the parade began in 1924, it was canceled from 1942 through 1944 due to World War II, in which materials that would have been used in the celebration, including rubber, were dedicated to war efforts, according to the news release.
