The overview
Each year, FISD is required to approve members for the district’s school safety and security advisory committee, which meets once each semester and once each summer, according to board agenda documents.
The committee assists in overseeing FISD’s Emergency Operations Plan, audits security and safety, provides space for collaboration with local emergency agencies, reviews mental health interventions and reviews proposals or funding for major safety projects, according to agenda documents.
This committee has been required since the 86th Texas Legislature, which, through Senate Bill 11, requires school districts to form these committees, according to the district’s website.
What else?
Trustees will also consider members for the district’s school health advisory committee, or SHAC, to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in health education instruction, according to the district’s website.
Board policy requires yearly approval of the committee by trustees.
The committee usually meets four times a year, and a majority of the members must be parents of students enrolled in the district and must not be employed by the district, according to district documents.
FISD’s board may also appoint one or more public school teachers, public school administrators, district students, health care professionals, members of the business community, law enforcement representatives, senior citizens, clergy, representatives of nonprofit health organizations, representatives of local domestic violence programs or representatives of another group, according to district documents.
