Killen’s Barbecue and SpindleTap Brewery opened two new locations in late July at William P. Hobby Airport as part of a new effort to showcase local businesses, according to a July 28 news release from Houston Airports.
The big picture
The release states the openings are part of a new strategy by Houston Airports, the city department that manages local aviation, to elevate passengers’ experience in the airport and use local businesses to define the city’s culture and hospitality.
Known for its brisket and ribs in the Pearland area, Killen’s Barbecue was recognized by the internationally acclaimed Michelin Guide last November.
“I never thought that my dad’s name or my name would be in an airport,” said Chef Ronnie Killen. “It’s very exciting to see and to make sure the quality is just like it is at the restaurant.”
SpindleTap Brewery also opened at the same time and is one of Houston’s fastest-growing craft beer brands, according to Houston Airports.

Looking ahead
The dual openings are the start of an initiative to bring more local restaurants to Hobby Airport, with other Houston staples to follow, including Velvet Taco, The Rustic, Throughgood Bistro, Common Bond Café, Fat Cat Creamery and Landry’s Seafood House.
“Your first taste of Houston’s best can start at Hobby before you even leave the airport,” said Francisco Cuellar, chief commercial development officer for Houston Airports. “Killen’s and SpindleTap set the tone for a world-class, Houston-friendly experience.”
