New Caney’s driver’s license satellite office will be reopening Sept. 2, after an almost yearlong hiatus, according to Montgomery County Commissioners Precinct 4.

What’s happening?

The driver’s license office is being reopened through a partnership between Precinct 4 and the Texas Department of Public Safety, according to an Aug. 27 social media post from Precinct 4. Previously, the New Caney location offered limited services, due to the location’s county employees having limited access to DPS systems, according to the post.

New Caney’s driver’s license office closed after Precinct 4’s agreement with DPS expired in December, Precinct 4 Chief of Staff Josh Pascua said Aug. 28. The new partnership will allow the facility to offer a full range of services—including driver’s license renewals and noncommercial driver’s license testing, but not commercial driver license testing—he added.

The new agreement between DPS and Precinct 4 will save taxpayer dollars since DPS will be staffing the office, Pascua said.

The history

The DPS satellite office originally opened in New Caney in 2021, as previously reported by Community Impact. No written or driving exams could be administered at the office.
