New Caney ISD saw improvements in science scores for the spring 2025 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, but was outperformed by the state in most categories, according to results released by the Texas Education Agency on June 17.

At a glance

Of the 20 grade levels and subjects tested, year-over-year performance in NCISD:
  • Improved in eight
  • Declined in eleven
  • Saw no change in one
The state scores were higher than NCISD’s in all but one category—the Algebra 1 End of Course Exam, which was 76% passing for NCISD and students statewide—according to the June 17 results.

NCISD officials opted not to comment on the STAAR scores before they are finalized in July.

Major takeaways
  • The largest decrease in year-over-year performance within NCISD was on the seventh grade math test with 25% approaching grade level this year compared to 48% in 2024.
  • NCISD fifth grade students taking the science STAAR saw the biggest increase in passage rates with 61% approaching grade level this year compared to 48% in 2024.
  • At the district level, science proficiency improved year over year while EOC scores decreased.
Taking a step back

In a June 17 news release from the TEA, Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said there is still room for improvement in public schools across the state.

“These results are encouraging and reflect the impact of the strategic supports we’ve implemented in recent years,” Morath said. “With [reading language arts] scores now surpassing pre-pandemic levels, we are seeing meaningful signs of academic recovery and progress. While this year also saw some improvements in math, clearly more work is needed.”
