Originally estimated to open this summer, a new dog park in New Caney has faced some delays, according to the East Montgomery County Improvement District’s October newsletter, which was emailed out to the community Sept. 18. The dog park is one part of a 200-acre park that the EMCID has planned.

What's changing?

The dog park project has been delayed due to changes to the project, including the use of public water and sewer systems instead of an on-site well and septic tanks, according to EMCID’s newsletter. Other project changes include:
  • The demolition of existing concrete structures, abandoned electric facilities and parking lots
  • The restoration of natural grass turf for the dog enclosure spaces
  • Work on automatic water refill sensors for the dog ponds
  • Work on improved restrooms, water fountains, parking and a dog wash area
Demolition on the existing structures and facilities in the park site was scheduled to begin in early September, according to the newsletter.

The breakdown

According to EMCID’s website, the larger park project will be completed in two phases, and will encompass features such as:
  • Areas for small and large dogs
  • A playground
  • A bicycle playground/pump track
  • A canopy walk
  • A covered shelter
  • Parking for visitors
  • Restrooms
Eventually, biking and walking trails as well as gardens to host wildlife are expected to be added, as previously reported by Community Impact. Construction on EMCID's dog park began in April, and the project was first announced in May 2022.
