About the program
Founded in 2015, Creativity Shell began as an after-school project at the Kingwood Branch Library with just two sewing machines, Founder and Executive Director Shelancia Daniel said via email March 26. Today, the organization operates out of a 20,000-square-foot facility and runs two mobile studios, which help deliver programming to schools, shelters, juvenile centers and community partners.
Creativity Shell's mission is to teach children essential life and practical skills through creative trades like sewing, cooking and woodworking, according to a news release from the nonprofit. The organization often works with vulnerable populations including children who have been impacted by human trafficking and homelessness, or who have been involved in the juvenile justice system.
Quote of note
"We started with a passion to help children build confidence and creativity through sewing, and quickly realized the deeper healing and empowerment the arts can provide," Daniel said via the news release. "Ten years later, we are so grateful to serve and grow with this beautiful community."
The celebration
Dubbed "Creativity Rocks - The Met Gala," the first of the nonprofit's 10th anniversary events will include a fashion show—which will showcase the work of Creativity Shell's young designers—as well as a buffet dinner and dancing. The event will be held at the Humble Civic Center—8233 Will Clayton Parkway, Humble—on April 5 from 6-9 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for students and $50-$100 for general admission, with proceeds benefitting the nonprofit.
