The Village Centers, which opened in Kingwood 22 years ago, operates around the motto, “It takes a village.”

The nonprofit offers a number of support services aimed at helping individuals with disabilities and special needs expand their social and life skills, personal wellness and vocational skills.

Kristy Conrad, executive director of The Village Centers, said the nonprofit was originally established to provide an avenue for individuals with special needs to succeed after they finish high school.

“When our clients age out of the school, what happens?” Conrad said. “They’ve been in a school setting for 22 years, and all of a sudden there’s nothing for them. ... These guys deserve to have a rich and full life, regardless of whether they’re in a school system.”

Collin Prusak, The Village Centers director of operations, said the nonprofit helps clients gain independence by teaching them the skills they need to find and retain employment.

Additionally, Conrad said The Village Centers offers a range of residential services, including housing and life skills training.

“We have assisted living and a three- or four-person group home option for families with Home-Based Community Services,” Conrad said. “Our clients love it because they are able to be their own person. Many of them want to be independent, and we help facilitate that.”

The nonprofit also offers transportation for its clients to and from the main facility for day services, work, faith institutions and appointments.

Jessica Morales, the director of development for The Village Centers, said community members can volunteer at the facility in a number of ways, including assisting at the The Village Thrift Shop, main center and residential center as well as helping out in the classroom. Monetary donations as well as new or gently used clothing, furniture and art supplies are also greatly appreciated.

“It really does take a village, and Kingwood has been that village,” Conrad said.
