Humble will invest nearly $3.5 million in water and sewer projects after Humble City Council approved the initiatives during the June 12 meeting.

On June 12, City Council unanimously voted—with council members Paula Settle and Andy Curry absent—to begin a $2.4 million water line project and Phase 6 of a sanitary sewer improvement project, which is expected to cost $1.1 million.

The project

The water line project will connect Houston’s water supply—located at the intersection of Hwy. 59 and Rankin Road—to Humble’s Water Well 6, which is located on Rankin Road, according to June 12 meeting documents. The 20-inch line will provide surface water to Humble in preparation for the city being required to use 30% more surface water beginning July 1.

“This is a vital project, ... [since the city of Humble needs] to take more surface water from the city of Houston beginning of July of this year,” City Manager Jason Stuebe said June 12. “This plays an integral role in that.”

On June 12, Director of Public Works Mark Arnold said the project contract is for 180 days. The new water line will be constructed by ISJ Underground Utilities LLC, according to meeting documents.

Stuebe said the project bids were higher than the city had budgeted for in the fiscal year 2024-25 budget, but city leaders will be able to put the rest of the project cost in the FY 2025-26 budget.

Other projects

Phase 6 for the sewer improvement project will include the replacement and repairs of worn down sewer lines in Humble, according to meeting documents. The overall project has been ongoing, Stuebe said.

“We save money, and then we take it out every couple of years, and we do some sewer rehab on a worst-first basis,” Stuebe said.

The sewers included in this phase of the project are located in Downtown Humble and Northshire neighborhood, Arnold said.
