Humble City Council at its July 14 meeting approved an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation to install a total of 12 pole-mounted license plate readers on state highway rights of way within the city.

According to the resolution, the license plate readers will assist local and state law enforcement officials by expediting the process of manually comparing license plates with lists of stolen, wanted or additional vehicles of interest.

Humble Mayor Norman Funderburk touted the measure, noting it would add an additional layer of security throughout the town.

“It will be a great tool for law enforcement,” Funderburk said. “When you come into the city of Humble to break the law, to do harm, we will catch you. There will be consequences.”

In other business, council members approved an interlocal agreement with Huffman ISD allowing the district’s police department to access the city’s communications infrastructure.

City Manager Jason Stuebe said the agreement would allow the district’s police department to access the radio frequency used by the Humble Police Department to request assistance with dispatch services in emergency situations.

“[Huffman ISD police officials] will be essentially transferred to our communications [officials], and we will be able to dispatch from there,” Stuebe said. “It doesn’t involve any sort of dispatch of our personnel or equipment to help Huffman ISD. It’s solely dispatch.”

Humble City Council is scheduled to meet for its next regularly scheduled meeting July 28.
