Humble ISD officials canvassed the results of the Position 3 trustee election after a ballot recount found incumbent Chris Parker maintained her lead over Natalie Carter.

The overview

HISD trustees canvassed the results of the Position 3 race during the board’s June 3 meeting.

According to the recount committee report, the final results of the recount resulted in one additional vote for Carter, bringing the final tally to 5,262 votes for Parker and 5,223 votes for Carter.

Parker thanked everyone involved in the election and recount process in a June 5 statement to Community Impact.

“I am honored for the opportunity to continue to serve the children, teachers and community stakeholders in Humble ISD,” Parker said. “I respect the integrity of the recount process. [Harris County Clerk] Teneshia Hudspeth and her team did an outstanding job assisting everyone with the process.”

Some context

Carter initially announced she would be pursuing a recount May 4 after being edged out by Parker by 40 votes during the May 3 election.

While the recount effort didn’t change the outcome of the election, Carter said she is considering contesting the results of the election due to concerns with Harris County's elections processes.

HISD Chief Communications Officer Jamie Mount noted the district will not be required to pay for any fees associated with the recount process, which are estimated to cost around $25,000.

“Under the Texas Election Code, the person requesting the recount is responsible for the actual cost of the recount if the election outcome is unchanged,” Mount said.

Should she file to contest the results of the election, Carter said she would be responsible for any costs associated with the proceedings.

What’s next

Carter said she is still evaluating whether she will file to contest the results of the election, noting she has at least a month from the canvassing of the election results to decide.
