The Humble ISD Police Department was honored by trustees at the board’s Dec. 10 meeting for becoming the first school district police department to receive Academy Training Provider status from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

The details

With the designation, the police department will officially launch the Humble ISD Law Enforcement Academy, officials announced in a Dec. 13 news release.

TCLE Deputy Chief Cullen Grissom said the academy will provide training to individuals seeking to earn certifications needed for employment in law enforcement as well as training for law enforcement personnel who already hold certification.

HISD Interim Superintendent Roger Brown touted the new academy in the release.

“The Humble ISD Police Department celebrated its 30th anniversary this school year,” Brown said in a statement. “Humble ISD Police have won state and national awards, but the department does not rest on past achievements. Humble ISD Police continue to seek new challenges.”

A closer look

According to the release, the academy will offer licensure courses for telecommunicators, jailers and peace officers.

Beyond these courses, the academy will host a variety of state-mandated training programs for officers who already hold certifications, officials said in the release.

Grissom noted the academy plans to partner with local law enforcement agencies to help them meet their workforce needs, noting there is a need for law enforcement training with a special focus on the needs of students and teachers.

“We got a lot of support from other similarly situated school district police departments who believe there is a need for school-based law enforcement-centric licensing training," Grissom said in a statement.

What's next

HISD officials said the academy is planning to open its first course to telecommunicators beginning in the 2025-26 school year, noting additional courses will be rolled out in phases.
