New Caney High School’s football, basketball and volleyball teams have been bumped up from Conference 5A to Conference 6A competition for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, according to the University Interscholastic League’s Feb. 3 district realignment announcement.

Porter High School—New Caney ISD’s other high school eligible for UIL competition—will remain in Conference 5A, while West Fork High School, which will open in August 2022, is not yet eligible for UIL competition.

UIL classifies schools into conferences based on enrollment. Conference 6A includes high schools with more than 2,225 students enrolled, while Conference 5A is restricted to campuses with 1,300-2,224 students.

According to the realignment, New Caney High School football, basketball and volleyball teams will compete in the Conference 6A District 13, which includes Cleveland ISD's Cleveland High School; Conroe ISD's Conroe, Caney Creek, Grand Oaks, Oak Ridge, The Woodlands and The Woodlands College Park high schools; and Willis ISD's Willis High School.

Porter High School will compete in Conference 5A District 8, which includes Goose Creek CISD's Memorial, Lee and Sterling high schools; Crosby ISD's Crosby High School; Humble ISD's Kingwood Park High School; La Porte ISD's La Porte High School; Barbers Hill ISD's Barbers Hill High School; and Port Arthur ISD's Memorial High School.

The realignment announcement comes just after NCISD trustees on Jan. 24 approved the hiring of Dougald McDougald on Jan. 24 to serve as the head football coach and athletic director of West Work High School.

McDougald has coached football at Porter High School since 2016, eventually serving as the team's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach in 2021.

Upon opening, West Fork High School will only have a freshman class. Scott Powers, executive director of public relations for NCISD, said some sports at the high school may compete at the varsity level beginning in the 2023-24 school year, though he noted the school's football program will not field a varsity team until at least the 2024-25 school year.
