Eight days after a demonstration in Katy Park, another event to bring awareness to racial inequality will be held in Fulshear.

Henry Dibrell, Leslie Hunt and Rhonda Kuykendall have organized Rally for Unity, which will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 12 at a parking lot at Fulshear High School, Kuykendall said.

The rally is meant to help residents in the Katy and Fulshear area learn more about racial issues in the community and find ways to engage and take action to create change, Kuykendall said. It will include speakers such as Brian Middleton, the Fort Bend County district attorney, as well as a list of resources that will also be posted on the One Fulshear Facebook page after the event.

“What happened to George Floyd has opened a dialogue,” Kuykendall said. “People believe we don’t have these issues [in Fulshear and Katy], but we do.”

Floyd—who grew up in Houston’s Third Ward—was killed in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25. A video of his death, as well as news of the two high-profile deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, set off days of unrest throughout the U.S. beginning May 29.

The Fulshear event is meant to be family-friendly, educational and peaceful with no protesting, Kuykendall said, estimating about 75-100 people will likely attend.

“What we want is for people to find ways to engage,” Kuykendall said. “We are three people who came together who want something done in the community.”

Resources at the event will include a list of books to read, videos to watch and local organizations to join to help residents become more educated about racial issues and take constructive action, Kuykendall said.

“Everything that we’re doing is to give people [options] for next steps, something to do,” she said of the rally. “We want reconciliation; we want justice.”

Lamar CISD has given its permission for the event to be held at the high school, and local police departments will be at the rally as security, she said.

In fact, Kuykendall said the organizers postponed the rally by about a week because they were concerned about the violence at demonstrations.

Following social distance guidelines is a priority for the event’s organizers, she added. Masks should be worn and will be available for attendees along with hand sanitizer. When the event concludes, attendees will not be allowed to congregate.
