The Katy ISD board of trustees unanimously approved a proposal to purchase 12 portable classroom buildings at its Jan. 24 meeting.
The buildings, which cost $81,036 each, will go to five campuses throughout the district, including Leonard Elementary School, McElwain Elementary School, Adams Junior High School, Mayde Creek Junior High School and WoodCreek Junior High School. The portables will cost $972,432, with an additional $144,000 for furniture and $399,120 for technology.
Each portable building can hold two classrooms, according to the meeting. Officials said the portable classrooms are reused for decades, and that the district has some as old as 40 years. Officials expect the portable buildings to be set up and usable in time for the 2022-23 school year. The total project cost is estimated to be $1,515,552.
