The Texas Comptroller's Office released its monthly sales tax revenue reports Feb. 8, and the cities of Sugar Land, Missouri City and Katy all show no signs of stopping their sales tax growth. Sales tax is collected from purchases made in the destination city and distributed the following month. The following is a breakdown of area cities and counties based on sales tax allocations over the past 13 months. Statewide, Comptroller Glenn Hagar distributed a total of $1.3 billion in sales tax revenue, a roughly 9.3% increase from February 2022.

Sugar Land

Sugar Land received $7.2 million in sales tax revenue in February based on January sales, which is $231,123 more than the city received in February 2022 when it received $6.97 million, or a 3.31% increase.

Year-to-date revenue totaled $12.7 million—a 3.34% increase over 2022’s revenue by the same time frame, which totaled $12.2 million. From February 2022 to February 2023, Sugar Land raised $72.1 million in sales tax revenue, which is 11.08% higher, or $7.2 million more than the same 13-month time period from February 2021 to February 2022.


Missouri City

Missouri City received approximately $1.55 million in sales tax revenue for the month of February, an increase of $161,527, or 11.63%, over February 2022’s revenue of $1.38 million.

Year-to-date, the city received $2.75 million, which is a 9.49% increase of $238,753 over 2022’s sales tax revenue total by the same time frame. From February 2022 to February 2023, Missouri City raised just over $16 million in sales tax revenue, which is 11.3% higher, or $1.63 million more, than the same 13-month time period from February 2021 to February 2022.

Katy


The city of Katy’s sales tax revenue continued to expand in February to $2.3 million, an increase of 15.68% over the same month last year. Year-to-date, Katy has received $4.1 million in sales tax revenue, an increase of 17.52%, or $615,347.

Houston

For its part, Houston has increased its sales tax base by approximately 12.53% since February 2022, elevating revenue from $79 million in February 2022 to $89.9 million in February 2023. Year-to-date, the city increased its revenue by a neat 8%, raising from $148.1 million by February 2022 to $160 million by February 2023.
