On Oct 28, 1999, crowds convened at 5000 Katy Mills Circle for the grand opening of Katy Mills.
“It was wall to wall [with] people,” recalled Katy Mayor Bill Hastings. “You were literally shoulder to shoulder and pretty much at the crowd’s mercy as to where you went.”
Hank Schmidt, who was the Katy mayor in 1999, said all the businesses in the mall held grand openings, describing it as a communitywide event. But residents were not the only ones who stopped by the opening event.
“I drove out from Houston to visit Katy Mills,” said D. R. Finley, then a Clear Lake resident. “It was exciting and fun. ... On the grand opening, it was very bustling.”
