Two-minute impact
The soft opening of the center, located at 5718 Second St., will take place during the inaugural Katy Exchange event March 15 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Historic Town Square, City Administrator Byron Hebert said at the Feb. 20 State of the City.
The center aims to provide a permanent interactive exhibit showcasing city information, maps and local attractions for both visitors and residents alike, said City Secretary Becky McGrew, who is also the project lead.
“It is a great way to reconnect with our community’s rich history, culture and unique heritage,” McGrew said in an email. “It’s not just for tourists—locals can discover new insights about Katy, explore interactive exhibits, and learn about events and opportunities that make this such a wonderful place to live, work and play.”
The specifics
The building, which was previously a fire station, will feature:
- A staffed reception desk
- A large interactive touch screen with upcoming events
- Kids room featuring interactive exhibits on rice farming, oil and gas and railroad industries
- Brochure racks featuring businesses, education and food
- Seating areas
In their own words
“Residents should know that the Katy Visitor Center is more than just an information hub—it’s a place to celebrate what makes our community special,” McGrew said. “This is just the beginning and a small part of the Historic Town Square vision shared by many Katy leaders, and it will continue to inspire others to engage and contribute to the growth of our vibrant community.”
Going forward
City officials are still working on finalizing audiovisual systems and staffing for the center, so an opening date has yet to be set, although Hebert said the facility would be open Thursdays through Sundays.
