Fort Bend County continues to make progress on new courtrooms to keep up with the growing population.

Current situation

At a March 13 Commissioners Court meeting, commissioners approved PGAL as the professional design contractor for three new courtrooms on the first floor of the Fort Bend County Justice Center in Richmond.

The first floor space was built with two shelled-out courtrooms to accommodate future growth, and the third courtroom will be in the space that previously served as office spaces until the addition of the administration building in 2018, according to agenda documents. The design is scheduled to be completed by this summer and cost no more than $382,500.

In case you missed it

On Jan. 9, Fort Bend County commissioners approved the $7 million addition of courtrooms. The addition comes after a 41% increase in population, according to census data from 2012 and 2022, Community Impact reported.

The courtrooms are set to feature:
  • A holdover cell for criminal cases where the client is in custody
  • An office suite
  • Courtroom technology
Construction is set to be completed in summer 2025, officials said.
