Katy ISD teachers will receive a one-time payment based on their years of service after board of trustees approved the measure in a special meeting July 16.

In a nutshell

The lump sum payment, which will be given to teachers in five-year intervals, is meant to encourage retention and attract tenured teachers. Teachers are eligible based on total years of service in and outside of KISD, according to a news release from KISD.

The details

Under the new program, educators could receive anywhere from $250-$3,000, according to the news release.
“The board wanted to do something in appreciation of our hard-working classroom teachers that would go above and beyond their salary increase, and recognize their service and loyalty to the district, and while staying within our current budget constraints,” board President Victor Perez said in the release. “This program is a starting point, and our goal is to enhance it and maintain it for the long haul."

The backstory

The decision comes after trustees chose to defer a decision at the previous June 24 board meeting on how to disburse almost $1 million toward the lump sum payment.

Trustees previously weren’t able to come to an agreement on how much and who should receive the payment, with the meeting ending with trustees saying they could discuss the options during a workshop or lunch.

What’s next

Teachers will receive the payment after the completion of the benchmark year, when they return to the classroom.
