After announcing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-January, Joann Fabrics and Crafts will close more than half of its stores nationwide, including four of its nine locations in the Houston area.

The details

The sewing, fabrics, and arts and crafts retailer will close 18 stores across Texas, according to a list of closures on its restructuring website. The Houston-area stores include the Meyerland Plaza location, a Katy store on North Fry Road, a Memorial City-area location and one near Jersey Village on Old Katy Road.

The hearing to approve the motion to close the stores is scheduled for Feb. 14, with going-out-of-business sales to begin at these stores as soon as Feb. 15, according to the website.

Diving in deeper

As part of the ongoing Chapter 11 process, the business filed a motion in early February seeking court authority to begin closing more than 500 stores across the U.S., according to a Feb. 12 statement from the company. It's unclear if there was a possibility the motion wouldn't pass, as representatives did not respond by press time.

Per the statement, the decision was made after an analysis of each store's performance and in an effort to keep the remaining stores operational.

The brand was founded in 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, with the goal to inspire creativity, per a news release on the bankruptcy proceedings. Joann stores sell sewing supplies, seasonal decor, art supplies, paints and more products to complete crafting projects.
