Texas Rodeo Saloon, a new spot for nightlife, has opened its doors in Katy on South Mason Road.

In a nutshell

Housed in the former Alamo Drafthouse in Katy, the venue aims to provide a one-of-a-kind bar and dance hall with live music and dancing, said Grace Andrews, marketing and branding director for Texas Rodeo Saloon.

“The Katy community is like no other; we wanted to get involved in the fun, welcoming and upbeat environment that Katy residents offer,” she said. “We chose to renovate the old Alamo Drafthouse movie theater because the space was large enough to house our Texas-sized dance floor and the history it holds of families coming to the movies together.”

The details

The saloon hosts nightly specials and themes, including:
  • Wednesdays (age 21 and up): Latin night, including free Latin dance lessons from 7-8 p.m.
  • Thursdays (age 18 and up): girl’s night out and college night
  • Fridays & Saturdays (age 21 and up): rodeo nights, including free dance lessons on Saturdays from 7-8 p.m.
Andrews said Texas Rodeo Saloon will also host radio station, 93Q Country’s Cowboys & Angels show on July 23 from 6-11 p.m. with live performances by Matt Stell, George Birge, Jackson Dean, Maddie & Tae and Hailey Whitters, with proceeds benefiting Paws for Heroes, a nonprofit that rescues homeless dogs and trains them to be companion dogs for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder.

The inspiration

Seeing beloved dance halls in the Houston area close such as Gilly’s and Wild West, Texas Rodeo Saloon owner Perry Thomson wanted to bridge the gap left behind, Andrews said.

“After these dance halls closed, the Greater Houston-area dance community has not had a venue to fill the gap that these places held in their hearts,” Andrews said. “Texas Rodeo Saloon was inspired by places such as these and hopes to provide a home for the country dance community just as those great dance halls once did.”

The drink menu

The beverage menu boasts a variety of beers, seltzers, wines and liquors, according to the website. The menu also includes specialty drinks including mules, bloody mary’s and martinis alongside an extensive selection of shots.

Additionally, bargoers looking to test their luck can spin the shot wheel, which offers 25 different shots for the same price. Upon spinning the wheel, bartenders will make whatever the wheel lands on.

“This is perfect for guests who don’t know what to order, want to try something new or feel like mixing it up from your traditional order,” Andrews said.

In the future, the dance hall plans to offer dinner options such as shareable appetizers, burgers and tacos, according to its website. Brunch will also join the business, with items including waffles, French toast and omelets.
