In a nutshell
At a June 9 meeting, Katy City Council approved an $519,996 construction contract with Environmental Allies LLC for the East Fifth Street asphalt overlay project aimed at expanding the lifespan of the road, City Engineer David Kasper said.
The project will bring the overlay along East Fifth Street from East Avenue to Katyland Drive aimed at restoring numerous cracks, potholes and base failures, he said in an email.
Zooming out
The street project—which is located near the city’s Historic Town Square—comes as the city works to complete area improvements such as opening a visitors center, improving landscaping and green space, and adding murals near the water tower, Community Impact reported.
Efforts to revitalize the area began with City Council discussions in 2012, and construction began in 2015, Community Impact reported.
Going forward
The project is expected to kick off in late July and will take 90 days to complete, Kasper said.
Ultimately, the city plans to reconstruct the roadway but a timeline and budget has not yet been established, he said.
