Katy is bringing more parking near downtown with two newly approved projects.

What residents need to know

At an Oct. 13 meeting, Katy City Council unanimously approved two construction contracts with Castillo-Aranda LLC totaling $1.01 million for Municipal Court and Second Street parking lot improvements.

Both projects were initially approved for a combined $118,005 in design costs at an August 2024 meeting, Community Impact reported.

The details

The Second Street project will replace the current asphalt and gravel lot with concrete, bringing 68-78 spots to the northwest corner of Second Street and Avenue A near downtown, Community Impact reported.

The project will also add:
  • New sidewalks with curb ramps
  • New concrete driveways
Meanwhile, the Municipal Court parking project will expand the lot by 42 spaces and add security measures. The project, which is part of the city’s capital improvement project, will include:
  • Security fencing around the parking lot area on the rear side of the building
  • A motorized sliding gate with keypad entry
  • New storm sewer drainage pipes
  • Sidewalk extensions
Construction costs are expected to total $651,725 and $361,690, respectively, though agenda documents recommend a 10% contingency for each.

Looking ahead

Workers are expected to mobilize in December and finish work around April, City Administrator Byron Hebert said.
