The expansion aims to serve a large portion of the university’s students—about 30% of UH students residing in the Katy area—to reduce commute times for some students and faculty and offer in-person learning opportunities distinct from online instruction, Bauer College Dean Xianjun Geng said in the release.
“By having our presence in Katy for students, we are going to be able to serve our existing students with more in-person experiential learning, which is a hallmark of the Bauer experience and a critical way that we serve industry as well,” Geng said. “And at the same time, we can potentially cater to a student population that would otherwise not even consider UH because of the distance issue.”
What they offer
According to the release, several courses will be offered either through hybrid or in-person instruction during the 2025-26 school year, including:
- Junior and senior-level undergraduate courses, such as personal finance, entrepreneurship, and management and organizational behavior
- Graduate courses required for the Healthcare Leadership Certificate program
In April, Jay Neal, associate vice president and chief operating officer for UH at Sugar Land and Katy, said UH would strategically offer courses that support local economic development of the region. The campus already offers nursing and engineering courses, and the new education graduate programs offered this fall are designed to align with Katy’s major industries and nearby school districts.
“Looking at engineering firms that are out here, tech companies that are out here, but also the school districts and having education programs here, the hospitals, the nursing programs, it's very strategic, and it makes sense,” Neal said.
Geng said Bauer College plans to partner with local businesses to support workforce development and regional growth this summer, including information on when a full degree program could be offered at the Katy campus, a UH representative said in an email.
“We want to be a strong partner that can elevate both the business in that region serving the student population, and building an even stronger tie,” Geng said. “This university serves this city, and this business school intends to do everything to make the business stronger in the Katy area.”
Moving forward
Fall enrollment is currently open, according to the release, and students can view available Bauer courses in Katy through their PeopleSoft account.
A UH representative said through email that the courses are almost at capacity.
