Chef and restaurant owner Pernille Reck, a Danish author inspired by the culture of her home country, used the capital city of Copenhagen, Denmark, for her Katy restaurant’s namesake.

Copenhagen European Kitchen & Bakery will celebrate its one-year anniversary in Katy on July 5. The restaurant serves food from different countries from around Europe, such as traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches and fried pork belly, Spanish-style dates in a blanket, and Hungarian goulash.

The interior design includes a stage with paintings by Danish artists adorning the walls; a lighted tree with personalized notes from patrons; and tucked-away spaces decorated with lounge chairs, board games and books. The design and atmosphere is synonymous with a Danish-style cafe, Reck said.

“This is a place where people can stay all day if they want to. I have so many tables that there will always be room for more,” she said. “I just don’t want people to feel rushed. I want people to feel that they can relax here.”

At Copenhagen, there is an emphasis on food integrity, Reck said. She said that means opting for sustainable practices, organic ingredients over processed foods and transparency with the restaurant’s open kitchen concept, where customers can see inside.

Reck said her mission was to ensure she is serving something healthy. A bevy of colorful vegetables are incorporated into almost every dish on the eatery’s extensive menu, and there is an in-house bakery where all of its breads and pastries are made from scratch—a great source of pride for Reck, she said.

“I just want to go back to basics, when we were kids [eating] what our mothers and grandmothers made. This was good food, and we just kind of forgot about it.” Reck said. “What I eat and what I serve to my family is important.”
