“I wanted it to be a show that I’m putting a dog in the fight,” Hagemann said. “I’m supporting [Fulshear’s] vision for the future.”
Dogwood Lane opened September 2020 and has products ranging from love seats and candles to personalized bread boards. Her best sellers are decorative pillows with local ZIP codes stitched into the fabrics, Hagemann said.
Hagemann’s background as an interior designer was, in essence, the first chapter of her career, she said. When her family moved from Tyler to Fulshear in 2016, she said she wanted to reinvent herself with a home goods business.
Planting those roots felt natural in a close-knit community like Fulshear, Hagemann said.
“I’ve never been able to be a part of a grassroots kind of situation, and that feels good,” Hagemann said. “Fulshear is very passionate about who they invite to be a part of the city as far as commercially, and we’re growing like crazy.”
Hagemann has served on Fulshear’s parks and recreation board since 2018 and recently joined the city’s Economic Development Corporation. Dogwood Lane and other area businesses owners have also discussed forming a downtown business alliance, Hagemann said, to promote community involvement and ensure a shared vision for the city’s continued growth.
“People want to support business here—the locals are really excited about supporting local,” Hagemann said. “I love that and I feel it, so I try to reciprocate as much as I can.”
Hagemann said she feels confident in the support from her community, especially after persevering through the onset of the pandemic.
“I’m trusting the relationships that I have ... are going to choose to shop with me, rather than Amazon or a bigger-box store,” she said.
