Two electric vehicle charging stations will be installed in Buffalo Bayou Park after city officials approved the project during a May 14 City Council meeting.

Two-minute impact

The $100,000 project will install two charging stations by the end of the summer along  Allen Parkway at Buffalo Bayou Park, according to a May 14 news release.

Council member Abbie Kamin, District C, said this project is part of an agreement with the Downtown Redevelopment Authority and represents “the revival of meaningful investment in Houston’s sustainable infrastructure.”

“As the Energy Capital of the World, we have a responsibility to lead the energy transition,” Kamin said. “We’re meeting the rising demand for cleaner, efficient transportation options, embracing our commitment to addressing climate change.”

What else?

Harris County has 54,743 registered electric vehicles, although that makes up only 1.50% of total vehicles, according to data from Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities and the North Central Texas Council of Governments. Additionally, there are over 300 public charging stations in Houston, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Since 2020, Houston has seen multiple plans aiming to lower community emissions, modernize infrastructure and promote the adoption of electric vehicles among Houston residents, according to previous reporting.

The city of Houston launched the Climate Action Plan in 2020, setting a goal to convert municipal light-duty and nonemergency vehicles to 100% EV by 2030, including Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County and city airport buses. The Resilient Houston Plan, launched in the same year, is a city partnership with Evolve Houston to increase EVs to 30% of new car sales by 2030.

Houston also received a $16.6 million grant in 2024 to help boost Houston's electric vehicle network by building more charging stations in disadvantaged communities and across the city of Houston, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
