The Houston-Galveston Area Council will host a virtual public meeting June 2 as the organization embarks on the early stages of updating its 2045 Regional Transportation Plan for the Houston-Galveston region.
The plan will include changes, upgrades and expansion projects to prioritize the transportation network, said Kristina Michel, a senior writer and editor with the H-GAC, in an email. The virtual meeting is meant to provide a chance for residents to tell the council ways it should be investing in improvements, such as wider and safer roads and relieving congestion.
The council covers 13 counties around Houston and Galveston, though the 2045 RTP only applies to eight of the counties—Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Galveston, Brazoria, Liberty, Waller and Chambers. It helps local governments initiate efforts in “anticipating and preventing problems,” according to its website.
Prior to the June 2 meeting, the H-GAC hosted individual public meetings for each of the eight counties. Moving forward, the council will use the public feedback to prioritize projects before a draft is presented in April. Additional public meetings will be held in October on project prioritization.
The RTP is updated every four years and was last updated in 2019.
Residents who want to attend can sign up here and take a survey. The meeting will also be recorded and available online. The survey will be available through June 30.
The plan should be updated by next year and will cover transportation planning for the next 20 years, according to a video explainer from the H-GAC.
“This is your opportunity to help us connect the dots and make getting around the region safer and better for generations to come,” Michel said in the email.
