Mala Market in Montrose has moved.

What happened

Somya Gupta founded and opened Mala Market, a nonprofit collective space for Houston small business owners, in 2022. The market works with dozens of local makers who earn 100% of the profits from what they sell, Gupta previously told Community Impact. Guests can shop for a variety of items, including artwork, vintage clothing, handbags, accessories, candles and other home decor items.

The retail store operated in Montrose for three years until officials announced on social media in late March that they are moving to the Heights after experiencing, what they said, included numerous economic challenges and physical obstacles.

"The realities of these challenges have caused us to pivot much faster than anticipated," Gupta said in a statement.

Quote of note

Mala Market now shares operating space with Central City Co-op in the Heights, according to the business's website.

“Over the last four years, we’ve seen over one million dollars funneled back into the local small business community, celebrated the true practice of shopping local and connected with the heart of this city. ... We’re confident we’ll find the strength and support to carry on, stronger than ever and continue serving this amazing community."
