Harris County commissioners will meet June 26 with more than 320 agenda items on the court’s slate that include a discussion on Harris County’s 2018 flood bond program.
The details
After Hurricane Harvey's devastation in 2017, Harris County voters approved in August 2018 a $2.5 billion bond measure to finance flood damage reduction projects.
Since then, according to the Harris County Flood Control District’s website, bond projects that have been funded include:
- $400 million to build stormwater detention basins
- $242 million for flood plain land acquisition
- $12.5 million for new flood plain mapping
- $1.25 million for improving the county’s flood warning system
Also on the agenda is an update by Harris County jail officials on population, staffing and other conditions at the jail.
What you need to know
County budget officials will also request a discussion regarding ongoing negotiations on law enforcement pay. While Harris County commissioners passed a motion May 22 that paved the way for increasing county law enforcement pay, the second motion called for the formation of a negotiations committee tasked with negotiating what Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones called a “clear path to pay parity with the Houston Police Department for county law enforcement” over a five-year period.
The first year would focus on securing at least $140 million for the pay raise.
Also on the agenda
As preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue, an art initiative called “Art of Soccer” will be displayed throughout Precinct 4, if commissioners approve a local donation of a 36-inch fiberglass soccer ball at the June 26 court meeting.
Also of note
A miscellaneous request for at least $217,000 in payments is being requested for legal service fees related to two former county employees in connection with certain legal proceedings, according to agenda documents. No further information on who the former employee is or what the case pertains to was listed.
