Unofficial early voting results from Harris, Montgomery and Fort Bend counties show Alejandra Salinas has taken the lead in the runoff race for Houston City Council, At-Large Position 4.
Results across all three counties, which are unofficial until canvassed at a later date, show Salinas has 55.97% of the votes, or 14,855 votes, while Dwight A. Boykins has 44.03% of the votes, or 11,685 votes. Taking a step back
Boykins and Salinas came out victorious against a pack of 15 candidates in November. All prospects were vying for the vacant seat left behind by former council member Letitia Plummer, who resigned her position to run for Harris County Judge.
However, Boykins and Salinas became the top two contenders after no candidates received more than 50% of the vote on Election Day. Salinas led the race with 20.88% of the vote, with Boykins close behind at 20.71% of the vote. The results sent the two candidates into today’s runoff election.
Meet the candidates
Boykins previously served six years under two mayors as a city council member for District D. In a Q&A with Community Impact, he said his core priorities included implementing a community policing and mentoring program, coordinating with state officials and stakeholders to better protect Houston from future storms, expanding senior assistance, and protecting the Build Houston Forward Infrastructure Program.
Salinas is an attorney and told Community Impact her priorities include governing with compassion, listening with respect, leading with transparency and serving with integrity.
