Houston City Council member Abbie Kamin confirmed with Community Impact on Dec. 12 that she will step down in the spring to run in the 2026 Harris County attorney election.

Kamin represents Houston’s District C, which includes parts of the Washington Corridor, Montrose, Meyerland and the Rice University area. She was first elected to City Council in 2019.

In a nutshell

Kamin announced her candidacy for Harris County attorney Dec. 5 via social media. She told Community Impact that she felt she could be of more service to her constituents and home at the county level.

“When the county attorney’s position became open, I started considering whether I could dive into the fight in a bigger way,” she said.

Kamin is a native Houston resident and practices as a civil rights and general civil attorney.

Her priorities as county attorney include reforming abuse and neglect protections for children, as well as addressing neighborhood needs, such as housing conditions, toxic waste and pollution, and eliminating “bad actors eroding public safety.”

Some context

Former Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee resigned March 17 to run for U.S. Congress District 18, according to Community Impact reporting. Menefee faces candidate Amanda Edwards in a Jan. 31 special runoff election for the position.

Going forward

Kamin said a special election will be called April 4 for her seat, and she will remain on the Houston City Council until her replacement is elected.

“Providing first-class constituent services to our District C residents has been and remains my highest priority as a City Council member,” she said.
