Families in need of birth certificates to register their child for the upcoming school year will be able to handle the task at an Aug. 2 back-to-school event hosted by the Harris County Clerk’s Office.

The details

“This initiative showcases public service in action,” Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said in a news release. “These invaluable partnerships significantly impact families in need of back-to-school supplies.”

The first 100 people in line at the event will receive the first birth certificate free of charge, while additional certificates will be available for $23, according to the news release.

What parents should know

The event will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the North Shepherd Annex, located at 7300 N. Shepherd Drive in Houston. Families should satisfy the following requirements in order to purchase a birth certificate copy, including:

  • Have been born in Texas
  • Be the person named on the certificate, the legal representative or an immediate family member with appropriate identification
  • Provide a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license; federal or state ID card; military ID; U.S. Passport and/or supporting documents
  • Complete the birth certificate application available at the office
  • Pay $23 in cash or credit card

For families who cannot attend the back-to-school birth certificate event, the documents can be requested online, by mail or in-person at any of the Harris County Clerk Office’s 11 locations throughout the county, according to county officials.
