Casual neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant Hughie's Tavern and Vietnamese Grille opened its newest location off of North Shepherd Drive on Feb. 22, after closing its Heights location in January, according to the restaurant's social media posts.

The overview

Hughie's, a casual dine-in Vietnamese establishment, brings a unique hybrid combination of classic Vietnamese cuisine with an American twist that the restaurant refers to as "the epitome of the American dream," according to the website.

Although the restaurant owners closed their Heights location in January after eight years in business, Hughie's opened a new location just a few weeks after on Heidrich Street near Independence Heights.

"It’s been a long journey from hardships to many many friendships, smiles and laughter at this location, but, unfortunately, this chapter of our story will soon be coming to a close," the Facebook post said.

An official with Hughie's said the restaurant had to close at the Heights location due to high rent and little parking in the area.

What's on the menu

The restaurant offers classic Vietnamese dishes such as their signature dish, the tender "shaking beef" also known as bo luc lac in Vietnamese, featuring cubed up tender filet mignon sautéed in a wok with onions and topped with housemade shaking sauce.

For a seafood plate, customers can try the shaking shrimp kale salad, which balances fresh, nutty, salty, tangy and a touch of sweetness with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Hughie's also serves classic banh mi, which is composed of well-marinated grilled meats with pickled vegetables, cilantro, jalepenos and Vietnamese mayo on a freshly toasted french baguette.

Hughie's also functions as a tavern, offering a large variety of craft, domestic and imported beers.
