Austin-based hotel development company Bunkhouse Group broke ground on Hotel Daphne in the Heights on Sept. 26. The hotel is set to open in early 2025.

The details

Hotel Daphne, located at 347 W. 20th St., is Bunkhouse Group's second project in Houston, following the opening of Hotel Saint Augustine, slated for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Hotel Daphne was presented as a European-inspired escape that will offer comfort and lush surroundings, owner Ben Ackerley said. It's envisioned as a gathering place for the community and aims to enhance the walkability and livability of the area.

The hotel is planned to have 49 rooms, a pool, a lobby restaurant, library, retail shop, and a focus on providing a space for both guests and the community. Heights Floral Shop, located across the street from the hotel, will relocate into the hotel, Ackerley said.

The name "Daphne" was derived from the owner's travels and hospitality roots. Daphne is also the name of Ackerley’s dog.

What they’re saying

Ackerley was inspired to build a hotel in the Heights after having dinner in the area.

“The Heights is [the] coolest neighborhood on Earth, and there's no hotels here, and we should be doing it right here,” he said. “I think this project is going to be another great addition to the Heights. The neighborhood is only going up, and I can't wait to share it with you all.”

The hotel aims to be a place where tourists and the local community can come together, similar to Bunkhouse Group's other properties in Austin, Bunkhouse President Lisa Bonifacio said.
