The big picture
The $26.5 million space was funded with help from philanthropist Lynn Wyatt, according to a Sept. 18 news release. Its features include a flexible performance lawn for concerts, a cascading water feature, gardens, trees, rocker seating built to facilitate one-on-one conversations and space for a future restaurant, according to the release.
What to know
A grand opening celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 21 for the new square. The space will be maintained by Houston First Corp., which will oversee plans for year-round programming, including from the arts organizations in the Theater District.
The square can be found south of Texas Avenue between Smith and Louisiana streets, located at 600 Louisiana St., Houston.
What they're saying
“This is a game changer for downtown Houston. I am so excited to see this square come to life as a public space that connects the arts and, more importantly, connects people to the arts,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a statement. “I thank Houston’s living legend, Lynn Wyatt, and her family for their dedication to this city and the arts.”
