The Houston Heights Association is hosting a presentation with members of the city’s planning department and District C City Council Member Abbie Kamin on Feb. 8.

The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. Feb 8. Registration is required.

Lacking zoning means redevelopment in Houston happens more rapidly than in other cities with more strict regulations. The meeting will serve to help residents understand how the permitting process works for new developments and how to effectively voice concerns, according to the event description.

Although the meeting was not called specifically to address a forthcoming Big Tex Storage Facility planned for the Heights, it will give residents an opportunity to address concerns. The storage facility planned for 730 E. 11th St. has drawn strong resistance from area residents who feel it does not fit the neighborhood’s character.

A group known as Stop BigTex Storage is planning a protest of the facility Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. The group has already gathered nearly 5,000 signatures opposing the facility.
