The Bayou City is welcoming the first-ever Houston Theater Week on Aug. 22-29.

The designated Houston Theater Week is a week when Houstonians can enjoy an exclusive buy-one, get-one-free ticket deal—patterned after New York’s Broadway Week, an Aug. 11 press release said. The tickets are for entertainment that will run throughout the 2022 and 2023 performing season and are not limited to the week.

“The Theater District Houston Association is thrilled to collaborate with Houston First Corporation on this new cultural tradition that celebrates our wonderfully-diverse performing arts and live event scene,” Jim Nelson, the chair of the Theater District Houston Association, in the release.

The week aims at helping the professional performing arts sector with its recovery from the pandemic while allowing consumers to enjoy performances at a discounted rate, the release said.

The shows will be from Houston’s permanent resident companies such as Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Alley Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, DaCamera, Performing Arts Houston, Theatre Under the Stars and The Hobby Center, the release said.

Community theater groups and music ensembles such as ROCO, Dirt Dogs Theatre Company, Main Street Theater, Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Kinetic Ensemble and 4th Wall Theatre Company are also partaking in this week.

According to the release, a list of performances includes:

  • "Ain’t Misbehavin’"

  • "Bach’s Cello Suites"

  • "Chicago The Musical"

  • "Cinderella"

  • "DaCamera Presents Kendrick Scott’s: Unearthed"

  • "Dance Theatre of Harlem"

  • "Handel’s Messiah"

  • "Legally Blonde the Musical"

  • "Mary Poppins"

  • "Rent"

  • "She’s Got Soul"

  • "STOMP"

  • "Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation"

“With 18 professional performing arts organizations joining forces there is truly something for everyone,” Nelson said.
