The Texas Transportation Commission officially approved the 2026 Unified Transportation Program on Aug. 21, outlining an additional $2.2 billion in state transportation funds for the Greater Houston area.

The big picture

The UTP is a 10-year project plan crafted and funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, and reviewed and updated on an annual basis according to feedback from communities and metropolitan planning organizations.

The 2026 UTP allocated an additional $2.2 billion for projects in the Houston region through 2035. Projects that received the largest amount of new funding include:

North Houston Highway Improvement Project: Segment 3C-2
  • Additional funding: $387 million
  • Total project funding: $1.74 billion
North Houston Highway Improvement Project: Segment 3D-1
  • Additional funding: $385 million
  • Total project funding: $1.34 billion
North Houston Highway Improvement Project: Segment 3C-4
  • Additional funding: $316.1 million
  • Total project funding: $1.16 billion
North Houston Highway Improvement Project: Segment 3A
  • Additional funding: $233.8 million
  • Total project funding: $771.76 million
Katy Freeway Widening: From west of Snake Creek to Mason Road
  • Additional funding: $219.2 million
  • Total project funding: $324.93 million
I-10 Bridge Replacement: San Jacinto River
  • Additional funding: $204 million
  • Total project funding: $809.7 million
The UTP also includes $6.51 billion for the remaining segments of the Grand Parkway in Fort Bend, Brazoria and Galveston counties. The B1 segment of the Grand Parkway, which runs from FM 646 to FM 2403, is scheduled to begin construction in fiscal year 2026.
