Through a collaboration between ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and homebuilder Taylor Morrison and 1,000 volunteers, a new home is in the process of being built in the Mason Woods community for a local family.

In case you missed it

As previously reported, developer Taylor Morrison is the exclusive homebuilder for ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.''

The project will take place during a 24/7 effort with volunteers from Aug. 17-23.

How it's going

Houston Division President Todd Rasmussen said Taylor Morrison was able to recruit about 1,000 volunteers to help build a 2,600-square-foot home through word of mouth and other marketing efforts.

Volunteer Liny Morris said she and her husband Fred Morris heard about the volunteer opportunity through local news and decided to partake in the project to be part of a show with a good cause as longtime fans of ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

While Fred Morris volunteered in the construction part of the project because his background in electrical and plumbing, Liny Morris said she volunteered in the catering department to feed volunteers due to her background in catering.

The new Mason Woods home construction began on Aug. 17 and is 15 hours ahead of schedule as of Aug. 21, Alex Kemelmajer, a Taylor Morrison builder and project volunteer said.

Kemelmajer said as of Aug. 21 he had volunteered 28 hours as one of the painters of the house and plans to continue helping until the project is completed.

“Although it's hot and everything else, it's just a good time,” Kemelmajer said. “You’ve got all the camaraderie of everybody being together, and you also get the understanding of what you're doing, which is a good thing. It's amazing.”

What’s next

Though the project will be officially completed by Aug. 23, Rasmussen said the home will be finished before then to allow The Home Edit designers to accessorize the home with furniture and other accessories tailored to the family’s needs and interests.

Rasmussen said the location of the home was selected due to commercial development in the area and education opportunities with local schools in the community which fit the family's needs.

“It's neat to see so many people come together for this cause [because] everybody's got such a positive attitude and they're so willing to help,” Rasmussen said. “The participation has been overwhelming, but everybody is just happy to come in and contribute because it's such a cool thing to do for the family.”

The episode is slated to air by spring next year and will be hosted by The Home Edit designers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin.
