Officials announced Aug. 15 that Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital was recognized as the first hospital in Texas to earn a new designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Magnet Recognition with Distinction recognizes hospitals that exceed the requirements for attaining Magnet status, according to a news release.

“Magnet recognition demonstrates our commitment to patient-centered care and our dedication to creating a supportive and empowering environment for our nurses, which ultimately enhances the patient experience,” Christie Dawson, vice president and chief nursing officer, said in the release.

About the program

Per the release, the Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations for quality care, nursing excellence, innovation, leadership and management.

Hospitals that earn this designation have to complete an evaluation that includes site visits, staff and patient satisfaction surveys, documentation reviews and interviews.

Why it matters

The Magnet recognition is valid for four years, and hospitals must re-apply and undergo the evaluation process again after four years.

Officials said Magnet-recognized hospitals typically provide a higher quality of patient care with lower turnover rates among nursing staff.

Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital was the first hospital in Texas to achieve Magnet Recognition with Distinction and one of only 11 hospitals in the U.S., officials said.
