Although Houston Methodist’s new Cypress hospital isn’t expected to open until next March, officials launched several services this spring.

Housed at the medical office buildings on-site, the multimodal rehab center and orthopedic injury clinic opened in March offering physical and occupational therapy, certified hand therapy, and pelvic floor therapy. Future services include neurological rehabilitation, biofeedback technology, speech therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, a golf simulator and more.

Additionally, officials said a cancer center opened in May with comprehensive radiation and medication oncology, infusion, and breast care.

Construction on the campus broke ground in early 2022, and it will consist of a seven-story, 569,100-square-foot hospital in addition to the two six-story medical office buildings.

The hospital will be equipped with the latest technology to provide patients more efficient and personal experiences, said Trent Fulin, senior vice president and CEO of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital. Some of these innovations will include:
  • Smart hospital rooms
  • Voice assistants and ambient listening
  • Ambient intelligence
  • Service robots
  • Remote patient monitoring
  • Self-controlling scheduling and check-in
“The new hospital will include the necessary infrastructure for the next century of innovation to improve care and interactions between patients and providers,” he said.

Why it matters

According to Fulin, 60% of Cypress residents leave the community for their health care needs. Houston Methodist already has a presence locally with primary care, specialty care and physical therapy services, but the continued population growth has driven the need for a hospital, he said.

“Cypress is a growing community, with over 5% population growth forecasted by 2028. However, many patients in this area leave the Cypress market for both inpatient and outpatient health care needs,” Fulin said.

By the numbers
  • There will be 770 employees and 100 beds at the March 2025 opening.
  • There will be 2,900 employees and 400-plus beds at full build-out.
  • 60% of Cypress residents leave the market for their health care needs.
  • 6,000 Houston Methodist employees already live in the Cypress area.
Next steps

Officials said 6,000 Houston Methodist employees already live in the Cypress area. They expect about one-third of employees to come from other Houston Methodist facilities, one-third to come from competitor health care entities, and the remaining to come from other parts of the state and country.

Debby Hughes, director of human resources for the new hospital, said hiring for leadership positions is already underway, and additional job opportunities will be posted throughout the year, including clinical and nonclinical roles.

“Our hope is that this campus becomes a true community hub, with on-site football, baseball and softball fields; and delicious dining options, including an Einstein Bros. Bagels location,” Fulin said. “We also recognize the key role that spirituality plays in the healing process, and will offer both a chapel and a prayer room for use by patients, their loved ones and our employees.”
