The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting Tuesday, Sept. 17, to share updates about the Jones Road Superfund site’s cleanup progress.

The background

Bell Dry Cleaners operated at 11600 Jones Road, Houston, from 1988 until 2002, when officials discovered staff had illegally dumped dry cleaning solvents into the storm drain behind the property.

Cleanup efforts at the site have been ongoing since it was added to the National Priorities List in 2003.

Community Impact reported in July the EPA was preparing to award a contract for a remedial investigation and feasibility study.

Advocates with the local nonprofit Texas Health and Environment Alliance have called for more immediate action to be taken at the site.

“These sites are the more complex contamination sites. If there was an easier or faster way to address this contamination, we would do it that way. They wouldn't need to be put on the [National Priorities List]. So, unfortunately, it's just kind of the name of the game with NPL sites,” Jennah Durant, a representative from the EPA Region 6 Press Office, told Community Impact in a June 27 interview.

The Sept. 17 meeting will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at Bleyl Middle School, 10800 Mills Road, Houston.
