All Harris County voting centers are now reporting results from the March 5 primary elections. Melissa McDonough won the Democratic primary for U.S. House District 38 with 82.58% of votes against her opponent Gion Christopher Thomas, who earned 17.42% of votes. The county reported 22,222 ballots were cast in this race.

As of 3:20 a.m., about 87% of voting centers in Harris County were reporting election results. In the Democratic primary for U.S. House District 38, Melissa McDonough continued leading with 16,534 votes, or 82.77%, in her favor. Gion Christopher Thomas followed with 3,443 votes, or 17.23%.

It appears McDonough will be on the ballot again this November against the incumbent Congressman Wesley Hunt, R-Houston.

As of 10:30 p.m. on March 5, 46 of 545 voting centers were reporting results in Harris County. Melissa McDonough maintained a commanding lead with 83.62% of the votes over Gion Christopher Thomas, who earned 16.38% of votes.

With early voting and mail-in ballot results tabulated, the Harris County Clerk’s Office reports Melissa McDonough is in the lead for the U.S. House District 38 Democratic primary.

On the ballot

Two Democrats were on the ballot in this Democratic primary.
  • Melissa McDonough, a Realtor and brokerage owner, received 10,400, or 83.87% of the votes prior to election day.
  • Gion Christopher Thomas, the CEO of Protest Organize Participate, received 2,000, or 16.13% of the votes prior to election day.
With a population of about 767,000, U.S. House District 38 covers 16% of Harris County, according to the Texas Legislative Council. It includes portions of Alief, Cy-Fair, Houston, Katy, Klein, Spring Branch, Tomball and Wallers ISDs.

Looking ahead


The winner of the Democratic primary will be on the ballot in the November general election, facing the incumbent Congressman Wesley Hunt, R-Houston, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
