Angel Nunez said he opened Juanita's Mexican Kitchen in 2000 near Loop 610 and TC Jester Boulevard in remembrance of his mother, Juanita Nunez, who died in 1999.

The basis of Juanita's Mexican Kitchen's menu comes from family recipes from previous generations originating in Guanajuato, Mexico, he said.

Meet the owners

Juanita's Mexican Kitchen is owned and operated by Angel Nunez, who has 37 years of experience in the restaurant industry, and his children Bianca Nunez and Miguel Nunez.

Though Bianca and Miguel Nunez studied criminal justice and sports management, respectively, the two decided to join their father’s mission to share the family’s legacy of authentic Mexican food.

Juanita's Mexican Kitchen has two locations—one in Fairfield and one in The Plazas at Lakewood Forest, a newly constructed shopping center owned by the Nunez family. The family also has plans to expand with a third location.

“I think we're lucky, blessed enough to have gotten to a point where I would say 80% of our customers have become regulars,” Bianca Nunez said.

The eatery also holds spirit nights, collaborating with local schools and donating to the Lakewood Elementary School in Tomball ISD monthly, Bianca Nunez said.

The Louetta Road location offers a private dining area that customers can reserve on the weekends for $250 and is expected to expand with an additional private dining room within the next couple of months, Bianca Nunez said.

On the menu

Bianca Nunez said Juanita’s Mexican Kitchen menu consists of authentic Mexican recipes passed down from her grandmother with a combination of Tex-Mex.

“A lot of our dishes, like our rice, have that homemade taste to it. But then we also have Tex-Mex with dishes like our award-winning enchiladas,” Bianca Nunez said.

The restaurant's head chef, Antonio Mata, came on board 21 years ago and has mastered the Nunez recipes while creating his own. One of Mata’s creations includes the restaurant's birria tacos made with short ribs marinated for 24 hours and slowly cooked in vapor.

Popular dishes that come from the Nunez family include the mole enchiladas and enchiladas poblanas, two varieties of enchiladas made with homemade tortillas and homemade sauces.
