Veteran and Good Eatz owner LaTroy Johnson opened his restaurant in July 2022. Johnson said he chose the location due to its friendly community.

“I love the Jersey Village area. People are really, really nice and welcoming,” Johnson said.

Johnson said while Good Eatz officially opened about a year ago, his restaurant business aspirations started in 2017 with a tent.

The backstory

In 2017, Johnson set up a food tent in front of his mother's beauty salon, where he sold cakes, watermelon and sodas. Johnson said he viewed the food tent as a hobby while he worked at CenterPoint Energy.

After working for CenterPoint for eight years, Johnson decided to turn his hobby into a business. In 2020, Johnson shifted his tent hobby into a food truck, which later expanded into the Good Eatz restaurant.

Johnson said he plans to continue operating the food truck as well as the restaurant, but the food truck is unavailable due to ongoing modifications. The food truck was originally designed to serve a maximum of 250 people and is under expansion plans to serve a capacity of 800 people. Johnson expects it to be ready early next year.

What to expect

Johnson said he gained his cooking skills from his father, who taught him to cook meals when he was 8 years old. However, his grandfather taught him his barbecue specialty.

Good Eatz serves Southern comfort food, including brisket burgers; bacon jalapeno burgers; patty melts; and its signature dessert, banana pudding. Johnson said customer favorites include the brisket grilled cheese and the fried chicken sandwich. The restaurant also offers a Sunday brunch menu.

In addition to its restaurant services, Good Eatz offers catering services, which allow the business to reach community members and contribute to community organizations, including Tomball Memorial High School, local Boy Scouts and Camp Hope.

Johnson said customers at Good Eatz can expect a welcoming experience with a wide array of food prepared efficiently, and customers can request alterations on menu items to customize to their liking.

In the near future, Johnson plans to add a strawberry banana pudding dessert to the menu as well as crawfish during crawfish season.
