Senate Avenue Brewing Co. took home a gold medal for their House District 138 Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup, according to a Feb. 19 news release.

The milk stout is brewed in collaboration with the office of state Rep. Lacey Hull, R-Houston, of Texas House District 138. It won the gold medal in the Legislative Pro-Am category, which was new in 2024, and featured beers brewed as collaborations between state legislative offices and brewers guild members, according to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild.

The impact

The overall competition featured 31 medal categories with 956 individual beer entries judged from 170 breweries across the state.

“This gold medal was a real team win for us. From the recipe’s creation to the actual brew day, every part of our operation had a hand in this victory,” Senate Avenue owner Andrew Mitcham said in the release. “It also touches upon one of our brewery’s core values: to celebrate and honor public service.”

Mitcham previously served as mayor of Jersey Village and opened the brewery in 2020 alongside his wife, Michelle Mitcham, who currently serves on the Jersey Village City Council.
