Mary Jo Johnson, owner of Steam Commander, knows outsourcing specialized cleaning can be nerve-wracking for customers as they bring a stranger with lots of equipment into their home not knowing what the final result will look like. This is why she said she takes great care to hire trustworthy employees and provide transparent scheduling for her clients.

“With us, my guys are all certified, background checked, uniformed and trained,” Johnson said. “And the program that we use sends a text to be able for our customers to click on a link to see who’s coming to their door. They know exactly in advance who is coming to their door. They get a picture of him, and so when they open the door, it’s the same guy in his uniform.”

Johnson and her team have been serving the Cypress community since 2015, when her industry experience shed light on the need for a trustworthy local steam cleaning service. Since then, Steam Commander has helped people restore their floors after hurricanes and freezes in addition to its regular residential and commercial steam cleaning services.

“I think something a lot of people don’t know about or what to do in the event that they find water in their home from a toilet overflow or a bathtub or your kid clogs the sink,” Johnson said. “They don’t know who to call, and we are here 24/7, 365 for water restoration—not just during major freeze events or hurricanes.”

Johnson explained that when she is faced with hiring woes that plague the service industry, she finds solace in her faith and is able to find the strength she needs to carry on.

“I tell everybody, ‘When you come to work here, if you cannot be flexible, this is not the job for you,’” she said. “So just being able to kind of go with the ebb and flow and adaptation every morning, waking up and saying, ‘All right, God, you go before us.’”

The Steam Commander team’s ability to adapt and provide quality service was recognized by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce, which named Steam Commander the Small Business of the Year for 2021. Johnson said she was overjoyed with the win since her business had been a finalist the past two years.

Steam Commander is looking to grow in the coming years, and Johnson said she wants to make sure the community is behind the business.

“Just continue to support us as we grow and add different services or grow different parts of the business,” Johnson said.
